The album was recorded around the same time as Parliament's Mothership Connection and Funkadelic's Let's Take It To The Stage at United Sound Systems in Detroit, Michigan. The album was produced by Collins and George Clinton. Collins co-wrote all of the album's seven songs (two with Clinton, one with vocalist Leslyn Bailey and four with Clinton and other band members) and did the arrangements (horn arrangements in collaboration with Fred Wesley). Since its original release, Stretchin' Out in Bootsy's Rubber Band has been reissued and remastered several times. In 2007, the album was licensed through Rhino Records and reissued through the Collectors Choice Music service.

"I'd Rather Be With You" is a highly sampled song, appearing in at least 40 other Hip-Hop and R&B songs. In 1991, "I'd Rather Be With You" was sampled by Eazy-E in N.W.A's "I'd Rather Fuck You" from their album Niggaz4Life. 1995 saw the song sampled again in Adina Howard's hit single "Freak Like Me". 2Pac sampled the tune in "Ratha Be Ya Nigga" on his album All Eyez on Me. Beyoncé interpolated the chorus in her composition "Be With You" on her debut album, 2003's Dangerously In Love. R&B singer Eamon interpolated the song with slight modifications in his 2004 composition "I'd Rather Fuck With You" for his debut album, I Don't Want You Back. Childish Gambino interpolates the song on his hit song "Redbone" from his album "Awaken, My Love!" in 2016.
