Catalyst - Perception in details

The catalytic idea behind Catalyst is to adjoin the tradition of experimental jazz with contemporary developments in R&B. Two urgent elements in the black musical palette-improvisational freedom and the immediacy of a gratifying, funky backbeat-marry as one. Eddie Green, the band's pianist and most prolific composer, has worked with jazz, blues and pop performers. His work reflects an inventive approach towards improvisation as well as the earthiness of compulsive rhythms. He is deeply rootes in the blues.

Odean Pope, best known previously for his work with Max Roach, has long been mentioned by players traveling through his city as an impressive talent. A versatile reedman, he is just about the only one besides Yusef Lateef to concentrate on the difficult oboe as well as tenor and flute.

Sherman Ferguson brings an important multifaceted ability to the drums since the group's nature demands a far ranging approach to rhythm. Tyrone Brown is the fine bassist although Anthony Jackson, Al Johnson and Ron Baker have taken over bass chores at times. One of the strongest factors in the band's success is that the personnel is constant.

The continual working together that makes Catalyst a likeminded unit, that subordinates individual egos - without suppressing individual abilities - to a group approach, may make it an increasingly potent force.

Catalyst is one of the funkiest bands you've never heard! For their newest Top Shelf release, the groove purveyors of Jazz Dispensary dig into the vaults of Muse Records for a reissue of Catalyst's 1973 jazz-funk sizzler, Perception.
